That definition matters: H05VV-F is a practical, cost-effective solution within its intended environment, not a universal replacement for rubber flexible cable, outdoor cable, or fixed-installation power cable.
What H05VV-F Cable Means
The H05VV-F designation follows the European harmonized cable coding system. Each part identifies a basic characteristic of the product.
H indicates a harmonized cable made to the relevant European harmonization requirements. 05 refers to a rated voltage of 300/500 V. The first V identifies PVC insulation around the conductors, while the second V indicates a PVC outer sheath. F means the conductors are flexible, normally made from fine-stranded annealed copper.
In practical purchasing terms, this designation tells a buyer that the cable is intended for flexible connections at low voltage, usually in dry indoor locations. The full specification must still state the number of cores, conductor cross-sectional area, color identification, applicable standard, length, and packaging requirements.
A common description may read 3G1.5 mm² H05VV-F. Here, “3G” means three cores including a green/yellow protective earth conductor, and 1.5 mm² is the nominal cross-sectional area of each conductor. Where no earth conductor is included, the description generally uses “X” instead of “G,” such as 2X0.75 mm².

H05VV-F cable is a familiar choice where equipment needs movement, connection to a plug, or a flexible lead within normal indoor service conditions. Manufacturers and distributors commonly supply it for appliances, office equipment, light portable tools, lighting equipment, domestic devices, and extension cords designed for appropriate loads.
For OEMs, the cable is often selected as a power supply cord because the fine-stranded conductor construction bends more easily than a fixed-installation cable. This helps with assembly, routing inside equipment, and repeated ordinary handling by the end user.
The correct application depends on the full electrical and mechanical conditions. Where It Should Not Be Used

H05VV-F is also not a substitute for fixed wiring cable. Although it may be used in certain equipment connections, routing it as a permanent building installation can conflict with local wiring rules and the cable’s intended duty. Buyers should verify the governing national code, equipment standard, and customer requirements before selection.
Selecting the Right Size and Core Configuration
Cable size should never be selected by appearance alone. The conductor cross-sectional area must support the expected current, voltage drop, installation arrangement, ambient temperature, and protective device characteristics. A 0.75 mm² flexible cord may be appropriate for a low-power appliance, while larger loads may require 1.0 mm², 1.5 mm², 2.5 mm², or another size determined by the application.
The number of cores is equally important. Two-core H05VV-F is generally used for double-insulated equipment that does not require a protective earth conductor. Three-core versions are used when line, neutral, and protective earth are needed.
